HUNG UP AND HOLLOW,
2001
This piece pre-dates my digital art files and only this detail shot remains. This installation was 200 hollow latex bird forms hanging above a few dozen solid plaster casts of hand-sculpted birds which rested on the floor. All latex skins were made from casts of birds that I sculpted as well. Each latex skin was hand-stitched together with visible seams.
This was the first piece I worked on post- 9/11. While it wasn't a direct response the events of 9/11, I later realized it was a response to my sense of the collective human spirit at the time, acknowledging our human frailty and temporality, and also our resilience and inter-connectedness.
This piece was exhibited at the Detroit Contemporary, Detroit, MI.
